Short Stories and poetry | Jamie Glaser | God could have

God could have

God could have

In the middle of the nightmare
God could have
Could have stopped the Nazis
Unarmed them
Whispered in Hitler's ear
No. No. No.
Over and over
Smoothed the barbed wire
Fattened the prisoner
God could have air lifted
Each child
Emancipated them
The innocent.
They could have intervened
Stopped everything
God could have
God exists in the suffering
We don't understand
It is blind to us
God mourns every dead
Holds tight to every loss
God could have
But God delivers
Doesn't imprison
Not even monsters
God frees them
The world is left to swallow itself
Over and over
All the while
I'm the holy palm
Of the knowing hand
God is not perfect
But invisible
Present
Everywhere.
